Ryan Capozzo, an American tenor from New York, is “generating genuine drama” on the operatic stage (Opera News).

Mr. Capozzo is thrilled to return to the prestigious Ryan Opera Center with the Lyric Opera of Chicago for their 2023-2024 season— in which he will sing the role of Steuermann in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer, and cover the roles of Števa in Janáček's Jenůfa and Howie Albert in Terence Blanchard’s Champion. Following his time with the Ryan Opera Center, Mr. Capozzo will be join the Schauspielhaus in Zürich as Don José in their reimagining of Bizet’s Carmen.

In the 2022-2023 season, Mr. Capozzo will be singing the role of Remendado in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of Carmen, as well as participate in the Ryan Opera Center’s Rising Stars program. Mr. Capozzo will be joining the Berkshire Opera Festival for their Spring Concert To Paris with Love in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In June, he will also be participating in the Georg Solti Accademia.

Mr. Capozzo graduated from the Yale School of Music with a Master of Musical Arts degree, where he was awarded the Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Prize. During his time at Yale, Mr. Capozzo had the pleasure of working with esteemed professionals and performing artists including Richard Cross, Gerald Martin Moore, J.J. Penna, and Howard Watkins.

Mr. Capozzo made his role debut as Arcadio in Daniel Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas with Yale Opera— directed by Candace Evans, and conducted by Christopher Franklin. Yale Opera also presented Mr. Capozzo with the opportunity to sing the partial role of Tamino in their Spring Opera Showcase, and he is eager to play Tom Rakewell from The Rake’s Progress in their Spring Opera Scenes. Additional recent engagements include singing partial roles of Captain Vere from Billy Budd and Prunier from La Rondine in Yale Opera's Fall Opera Scenes, singing the role of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi as a guest artist with Purchase Opera, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with the Berlin Opera Academy, and the role of Reverend Samuel Parris in Albany Records’ recording of Ward's The Crucible.

During his time with Purchase Opera, Mr. Capozzo performed roles such as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Nerone in L'incoronazione di Poppea, Reverend Samuel Parris in Ward's The Crucible, and Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Some of Mr. Capozzo's solo concert credits include Sunday in the Park with Lyric under the baton of maestro Enrique Mazzola, the premiere of William Kent’s The Philistine Traveler under the musical direction of James Sinclair, Mozart's Requiem with the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music and Rye Presbyterian Church, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy under the direction of Ransom Wilson, Handel's Messiah under the direction of David J. Recca, and Vivaldi's Magnificat with Stanwich Church and Rye Presbyterian Church.

He was chosen as a district winner of South Carolina, and awarded second place in the Southeast Region of The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2022. Ryan was awarded the Windsor Encouragement Award in Vero Beach Opera’s Rising Stars Competition, selected as a semi-finalist for Annapolis Opera's 2021 Vocal Competition, and he was awarded the Briarcliff Music Scholarship in 2016.

Mr. Capozzo holds a B.M. and a M.M. from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, as well as a M.M.A. from the Yale School of Music.
